A massive battle explodes on the farm where Tom is enslaved. British and American soldiers repeatedly clash, determined to destroy one another.

Before the war
In the spring
Like other enslaved people, Tom was made to build fortifications for the American military. It might have been a good time to run for freedom.
Many enslaved people did.
And others went to the British in exchange for a promise of freedom.
Now
With the war at his door
Tom considers fleeing again. But he holds his son, Frank, and thinks of Bet, his wife, and decides to stay, protect them, and hopefully grow old with them.
Will they even survive?
